Project history
East and Campbell Jackson Architects were commissioned to do the feasibility study as it was felt that community facilities in Lydney would need to be reviewed if the community was to be well served by these facilities in the 21st Century.  The feasibility study has been funded by the Learning and Skills Council, Gloucestershire Market Towns Forum, the Countryside Agency's Local Grant Scheme and the MCTi Quick Win Fund. In response to proposals to either extend the current building at Naas Lane or completely rebuild on the site it was evident that:
  • Some people were concerned with the identity of Lydney, and felt this is closely tied in the old school building at Naas Lane.
  • Some people believed that only a new building at Naas Lane would enable the uses that are required, and that a new building would help sustain Lydney as a place to live, building on the identity of the town.
  • A lot of people were concerned that the building should be environmentally sustainable. The Naas Lane user-group which commissioned the study was encouraged by the number of residents that understood the significant opportunities a new community building in Lydney would provide.  It was agreed that East and Campbell Jackson would look further at the opportunities a new building on the site could open up, and find imaginative ways of maintaining a presence of the school building and its special features on the site. It has also been agreed to extensively look at  ways in which the use of Lydney Town Hall can be increased and add value to its significant role in the community.
